A bittersweet surprise.

In the midst of doing my revisions,my phone rang.I would normally just shut the ringer off if a call came while im studying. This time,i didnt. My reflexes just would not allow me to ignore the call.
"Hello", a voice from the other line said."Remember me?" the voice continued.Bewildered and with only few seconds to guess who is it,i gave up.It was a voice i found very familiar."It's Iqah,Len!". I jumped off my seat and squealed.Instantly,my spirits were lifted when i heard her voice. It was a different voice i heard when i visited her.The difference then and now was hope. She sounded hopeful. At that moment,i knew that all our efforts will not be in vain.

It wasn't a long conversation. She had 30mins calling time to call her sister, brother, mother and me.The first thing she asserted was that she is fine and treated very well by the wardens.Last few days,an offical from Singapore Embassy ,Mrs Lim visited her and passed the great news to her.The news that we have met our $50K mark and how the commitee is spreading her story every single chance we have.Mrs Lim even joked that she has been quite the celebrity back home.Touched and appreciative, she instantly broke down.Even the two wardens, who are cuffed to her, sobbed tears of joy.Everytime she leaves her cell, her right hand will be handcuffed to a hand of a warden and the same goes for the other side.Iqah has only nice things to say about the prison wardens, who has writen an appeal letter to the courts to ask for leniency  for Iqah.

I told her about the postcards we have collected from the previous fleamarkets with words of encouragements for her.She sounded pleased. She asked about the various friends who is in the commitee and told me to print more pictures of the commitee for her.She reminded me to get motivational books for her on my next visit. The heartbreaking request came when she called me the 2nd time. She wanted me to drive her daughter up to visit her.The longing was too unbearable.

She asked me when and what time will i visit her.She ended the call by telling me she'll be counting the days and to send her love to all of her friends and the well wishes.

I urge the readers of this blog to support and lend us your voice. To reunite a mother and a daughter.Help us win this cause. To bring Atiqah home in the near future! And to raise awareness to the masses so no one shoule ever fall prey to this cunniving bullies.

We,the SaveAtiqah commitee was very humbled and touched by what we encountered yesterday. We were told that Liyana from Mommamiia Creations and Kristen from webelieveinsecondchances were helping us raise funds for Atiqah.Liyana who is an online entrepuener was going to sell her hand made jewelleries and Kristen was offering postcards for Vui Kong and Atiqah in exchange for some kind donations at a book cafe in Duxton Road called PigeonHole..Naturally,we were all eager to attend to convey our heartfelt thanks to these kind hearts personally.

However,we left with much more than humility and appreciation. We left with an abundance of hope , belief and love. And i'll say,you cant put a price tag on them.Being around our friends from webelieveinsecondchances, the saveatiqah commitee as well as Mr M.Ravi, i realized hope is not lost and together our voice could be loud enough to make a change.I have always thought that the world is a lost cause and the good ones are all in heaven but i was proved that my beliefs were very far from the truth. In that cafe,we were  surrounded by friends who care and would go to the extra mile to help when they didnt have to.:)

Thank you  SecondChances for raising $377 yesterday. However, the commitee has decided to leave the proceeds to SecondChances  for future events funding. Not just for Atiqah, but for Vui Kong and Chun Yin or any death penalty cases in the future.
As we have already reached our $50K mark,we will no longer be holding any donation drives. However,we will continue selling at flea markets every other week and the proceeds will be used for future awareness campaigns and  to help Atiqah's mother and daughter. These are the two people who has been hit the hardest financially as Atiqah was the sole breadwinner of this little household.

Special thanks again to Liyana for coming forward and helping us.To the whole team of SecondChances for the guidance and support. And to M.Ravi.( I am still in awe of this man.The world needs more people like him)

Thank you all for the support, love and encouragement.Hopefully, Atiqah will get the chance to thank you all personally one day.
Till then, we will continue fighting to SAVE ATIQAH.

We have met our objectives!

On the night of Mar 18, my wife, Lenie received a call with news that Noor Atiqah M.Lasim a Singaporean single mother, was sentenced to death by the Shah Alam Court, Malaysia. She could not believe it at first but Yahoo News confirmed this with pics of Iqah herself. Instantaneously Lenie broke down into tears.
Immediately Lenie contacted Edayu (Iqah sis) and pledge to help. That was the start of the Save Atiqah movement.
Lenie didn’t know what form of help she could give, but she wanted to do anything she could as she couldn’t believe that Iqah, her friend for 14 years could do a big enough mistake that warrants a death penalty.
With the blessing of Atiqah’s family – Abg Zainal, Kak Ayu, Kak Ena, Abg Bhai, we started this blog. Our objective was simple; to raise S$50K to help Atiqah.
Today I’m pleased to announce that WE HAVE MET THAT OBJECTIVE! J
We have raised S$50K today and it would not be possible without the help of all of you.
Special thanks to the committee members: Shakina, Bella, Farhan, Ifah, Hafizan, Janna, Wati, Rizi, Hamir, Arliana, Irda, Izwah, Shima.
Special thanks to our friends in the media.
Most importantly special thanks to you the donors!

Help Liyana Help Atiqah

Ever since we embark on this cause, we have been blessed to come in contact with a lot of kind- hearted souls. One such example is Liyana. We do not know Liyana, Atiqah did not know Liyana and yet she has come out to help our cause. Thank you Liyana and thank you all!

Here is her story extracted from :

Help Liyana Help Atiqah

This is Liyana. When we met her last year, she was living in a tent in Sembawang Park with her husband Fazli, mother, and two young sons. She was also seven months pregnant. Life, as you can imagine, was pretty damn awful.

We could tell you so much more about Liyana’s ordeal, but for now, it’s enough to say that things are a little better. Yes, it's still a struggle getting through each day. But at least Liyana's family are no longer sleeping in a tent. They’re sharing a three-room HDB flat with another couple and their four kids. It’s a little crowded and a little stressful, but as Liyana puts it, “I'm glad we have a proper roof over our heads.”

A few months ago, Liyana decided to start a small online business selling handmade jewelry. The pieces are quirky and very pretty. Liyana makes about $200 a month from her business - money she uses to buy daily necessities for her two boys and baby girl.

This is Noor Atiqah, a single mum sentenced to death in Malaysia for drug trafficking. She’s just 27 and her little girl is seven. They’ve not seen each other in two years. Noor Atiqah’s family and friends believe she is innocent and are desperately trying to raise $50,000 to appeal the verdict.

Liyana has never met Noor Atiqah before. But when we told her about the case, she started to cry.

“My life is hard, but when I hear this story, my heart…”

She never completed the sentence but we knew exactly what she meant.

Liyana has decided that she wants to do something for Atiqah. Next week, she’ll be setting up shop at “Sunday Eclectica”, a fleamarket at Pigeonhole. On sale will be a range of handcrafted earrings, necklaces and other pretty trinkets, as well as some yummy baked goods. Our friends at "We Believe In Second Chances" will also be selling badges, wristbands and cupcakes. Liyana has generously offered to contribute a portion of the day’s takings to the Save Atiqah fund. “Second Chances” will donate 100 percent of their profit to the cause.

When we asked Liyana why she wanted to help, her answer was simple, “I’m a mother. How would any child feel about losing her mother?”

Please help Liyana help Atiqah. Come visit us

22 March 2011

The Singapore Anti-Death Penalty Campaign (SADPC) wishes to express our utmost disappontment at Shah Alam High Court’s decision to sentence Noor Atiqah M. Lasim to death for drug trafficking.
Noor Atiqah, a 27 year old single mother of a 6 year old girl from Singapore, was found in possession of 342.1 grammes of heroin and 30.3 grammes of monoacethyl morphine at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) on Jan 5, 2009. According to her statement as reported by the media, she claimed that the bag containing the drugs did not belong to her.
We will like to reiterate our stand against the use of the death penalty as a punishment against crimes. We implore the High Court of Shah Alam to look into this matter again, especially so when the result of the sentencing will be irreversible, leaving a young child without her mother.
Thank you.
Rachel Zeng,
Singapore Anti-Death Penalty Campaign (SADPC)

We want to see them smile again!

A mother.A daughter.A sister.A friend.
She is all the above. She is no saint. With alot of imperfections and flaws just like you and me.But once you spend a little time with her, you, too will be smitten.

She is larger than life.
If she were to be a stand up comedian, she'll be better than Rusell Peters.
She loves fiercely.
She's fiesty.
She could turn rock into a delicacy. She's got magic hands.
Have i mention she's got magic hands? Give her a piece of paper or a cloth and she'll turn it into a beautiful piece of art.
She is full of life and joy.And you cant help but feel the same if you are near her.
So i say if you hate life, stay at least 10km away.:)

I could go on on about how much joy she has brought to my life. How much love she has for the daughter and how much her family dotes on their youngest girl.
Now she is a shadow of her former self.
All i want is to see a daughter reunited with her mother..

A brother who dotes on his baby sister.

Please help our friend Atiqah

Remember her?
IQAH. She has been my good friend since the 1st day i met her in Ping Yi ,14 years ago.I loved her then and ive never stopped.I am beyond devastated by what has happened to her.

I am sure i am not alone, each and every one of you must have your own stories of time spent with Iqah.

To me,she is one of the most funniest person i've ever met.She is hilarious. As i type this,i swear her laughter was ringing in my mind.It made me smile.I hope ill hear them again.Iqah is alot of other things too.She is a strong woman who against all odds, raise a baby on her own.I always told her how proud i was of her as a mother.Yet,she has a 'filmsy' heart. She cries over the siliest things!.She loves cooking and she is a great one! she would cook for you even if its 3am in the morning! i remember how she would always come over and completely took over the kitchen & chores and told me to rest when i was pregnant with my 2nd..But like any of us,she has her flaws. She loves and trust easily.Sadly, because of these, she is going to lose her life.

Some of you might already have heard it on the news. She has been sentenced to death by Shah Alam High Court on Friday,March 18.She was allegedly caught with drugs on January 2009 & was finally sentenced after 2years.All of us,her personal friends, might be shocked by this news.i had alot of questions when i first found out.It felt so surreal. The last i talked to her,she was telling me how she had found a good job and how she,her daughter and her mother was going to be ok moving forward.

It all started sometime in 2007.She was doing well, professionally.Being a personal assistant to the MD of an entertainment company, not only did it pay well,it has alot of perks.Rubbing shoulders with local celebrities was one of it.Unfortunately, that company shut its doors and Iqah was laid off. That was when life challenges her.As hard as she tried, she couldnt land any job permanently. The jobs she got are temporary ones or on contract. For the next few months, she was living hand to mouth. With a aging mother and a toddler to provide for,she was pressured. But she persevered.

Unfortunately, predators are everywhere. And these bastards can sniff out the vulnerable ones. This time these predators come in a form of a Nigerian man.Being at the wrong time and place,he spotted her and that was it.She was his target.A very single mother who is vulnerable emotionally and desperate for money. He befriended and romanced her.Gave her money and brought her on holidays. She fell for it.He promised her a better life.He convinced her that he will fund a textile business for her in Singapore.Thinking she was to be a business owner, she followed him to China twice to meet with textile manufacturers and visit their factories. Both trips went well.
Then the unfortunate happened. On new year 2009,she receive a strange call from China requesting her to fly over and pick up the textile.Normally the manufacturer would contact her friend. However,in this instance, the manufacturer claimed her friend was uncontactable and was comfortable working with iqah seeing she has been to the factory and meet him in person. She agreed and the manufacturer has arrange for his contact to meet Iqah in Malaysia to pass her the travel allowance.Upon meeting the contact,a Ghana national,he gave her a luggage bag to bring to China so that she has space to pack the textiles back home. This luggage was the trap.Inside this bag,was an envelope which well hidden that it wasnt detected on the 1st scan, what more by Iqah.Unknowingly, she was made a mule,a scapegoat. The rest is history.

The family has been plagued by the high cost of her defence the last 2years.She has a 6year old daughter and i swear her mother has aged these past two years.
The reason why im writing this is to sought help from all of you. They are going to appeal this sentence and they only have 2 chances.Hence,i am planning on organising a fund raiser for her.But i thought ill start from us,former ping yians first. Please contribute how much you can.No amount is too little or too big. This funds will be for her defence fees.Or if any of you have any other ideas on how we can help her, please call me at 96999073.

To contribute,

I UOB Current account

Please comment/PM/sms/ call me before/after transfer.

On behalf of the family,i would like to thank all of you. Please keep her in your prayers.
